Ensuring learners are fully engaged with the Reading Test is essential to gather reliable data that can inform your teaching and intervention strategies. For tips on setting learners up for success and understanding what happens on the test day, see here.
Once learners begin the test, you can actively monitor their engagement in two key ways: item completion and time taken.
Monitoring item completion:
You can track the number of items completed by each learner. Each test has a maximum of 25 items and progress is shown as two numbers:
- The number on the left is the items completed
- The number on the right is the total number of items served so far
This information is updated as the learner progresses through the test.
NOTE: In some browsers, you may need to refresh the page for the number to update.
Monitoring time taken:
You can also monitor:
- Average time taken per item:
- This can be viewed during the test or after its completion.
- An unusually short average time (e.g., less than 60 seconds per item across several items) may suggest that a learner was not fully engaged with the test.
- Overall time taken on the test:
- This information is available in the results download after the test has been completed.
How to access Reading Test engagement data:
- Go to the Reading Test area of your teacher dashboard.
- Find and click on the relevant test session.
- Locate the learner whose data you want to view.
- Click the down arrow next to the learner’s name.
You will see the following details:
- When the test was started.
- If the test was voided (and the reason).
- The number of items completed.
- The average time taken per item.
