How do primary schools implement the Core Curriculum?

Bedrock’s core curriculum has the power to transform the instruction of Tier 2 vocabulary and grammar at primary schools. It offers a consistent solution to language learning, encourages learners to read on a regular basis, and provides a well-sequenced and engaging approach to grammar instruction.

Using the core curriculum in primary schools

To make the most of Bedrock and ensure that their primary learners are engaging with the content, many of our current schools have adopted the core curriculum in the following ways:

• Often, Bedrock is used within the classroom more heavily than at home. A blended approach works well for many primary schools, but those with the highest engagement implement Bedrock within school hours, creating strong links between the core curriculum’s content and in-class instruction.
• The grammar videos can be used by teachers during class time, and then learners go on to complete lessons afterwards. This allows learners to be supported at a whole-class level before independently completing the activities, supporting retention of the new grammar content.
• It can also be beneficial for learners to complete grammar lessons at home as part of their Bedrock homework, and then teachers can guide practice activities during class time. This allows teachers to support learners in areas that they have found more challenging.
• Vocabulary lessons are often completed as a starter activity at the beginning of literacy or reading lessons. This strengthens the link between explicit literacy instruction and in-class learning.
• Bedrock lessons can be used as a settler activity after break or lunchtime, preparing learners for time in the classroom. This provides a sense of routine and more structure to the school day.
• Dedicated Bedrock time is often set aside as part of the timetable. This creates protected space for learners to develop their literacy skills and makes the acquisition of Tier 2 vocabulary a priority within primary.
• When asking learners to complete lessons at home, most primary schools find it helpful to set a target based upon achieving a certain number of points, or spending a set amount of time learning, so that learners have a clear idea of their weekly Bedrock goals.
